Chinese Ink Stick / Cake Table Screen 1000 Deer
INK STICK TABLE SCREEN DATED " QING YONGZHEN FIRST YEAR " (1723)
A magnificent rare One Thousand Deer Ink Stick table screen. A marvellous finely detailed portrayal of a multitude deer in a landscape setting of trees rockery waterfalls and streams.
The superb details of the deer pursuing their various activities are too many to describe, they are an absolute delight to view.
Calligraphy on either edge of the actual screen translates as:
Qing First Year of Yongzhen (1723)
Huizhou Wang Jin Sheng Zhi ( Huizhou = the place. Wang Jinsheng = the artist name. Zhi = made)
Most "Ink Stick" table screens of this form are variations of Scholars in a Landscape setting theme.
This screen of 1000 deer is classed as being extremely rare it also an excellent work of art, representative of the master carver and ink maker, Wang Jinsheng.
"Wang Jinsheng (1692 -1761)
was a famous Ink maker in the Qing Dynasty. His pen name was Jian Gu. He was from Shangtiang Village, Jixi County, Huizhou. He was originally an ink maker for Cao Sugong.
He rose to prominence during the reigns of Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Yongszheng, broke away from the shackles of the Cao family, and opened the Jian Gai Zhu ink shop in Huizhou.
Wang Jinshengs ink making skills were exquisite, and his carving and decorations skills reached perfection.
He was as famous as Cao Sugong, Wang Jie'an and others."
Formerly the property of a Japanese collector.
Condition : Very Good. No Breaks. Age wear and rubbing. Some small age hairlines.
