Ivory Fisherman

Fisherman

A superb Chinese ivory carving of a fisherman dressed in a tied half robe, a straw hat on his head, a carry basket at his waist.
One leg half on top of a very large woven cane basket the other standing in the waves washing around it. His right hand grasping at the fish inside the basket whilst his left hand grips the top.
Mouth partially open a contented look on his chin whiskered face.

His granddaughter standing outside the basket, dressed in a crossover robe her hair tied with bobs on either side. A pleased look on her face, as she stands in the waves flowing around her legs, a large sea bream in her hands.

The basket carved in a reticulated woven openwork split cane design.
In front a large pincer crab attempts to clamber up. A seabird flying above a clam shell, all surrounded by waves and foaming crests.

An excellent composition, a rare unusual carving.

Early 20th century.

The ivory of a good aged colour and patina
