Ivory – African Chess Set

A very rare primitive hand carved ivory chess set. This set would be totally unique, a one of a kind.
The International Trade in Ivory was banned by CITES in 1989.
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of the species.
This ivory set was carved to order by local tribesmen in 1961 for a gentleman who worked for many years in East Africa for the ILO (International Labour Organisation, a United Nations Agency).

They do not have the fine details and artwork seen in Japanese and Chinese artworks.
They are however in demand by collectors of primitive artworks.
Due to the never ending demand for legal pre Cites ivory in China, Japan, and around the world, ivory will keep on increasing in value.
Its attraction and beauty stretching back thousands of years is timeless.
