Ivory – African Pair Native Woman Busts
GENUINE AFRICAN ELEPHANT IVORY
A superb pair of African tusk carvings each portraying the bust of a tribal woman beauty.
Dating to the 1930's, this pair of Kongo ivories reflect the dynamics of artistic expression and social history among peoples throughout west-central Africa’s Lower Congo region who trace their heritage to the kingdom of Kongo.
In this region, ivory was a precious commodity that was strictly controlled by Kongo chiefs and kings.
The International Trade in Ivory was banned by CITES in 1989.
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of the species.

African Ivory carvings are classed as primitive art.
They do not have the fine details and artwork seen in Japanese and Chinese artworks.
They are however in demand by collectors of primitive artworks.
Due to the never ending demand for legal pre Cites ivory in China, Japan, and around the world, ivory will keep on increasing in value.
Its attraction and beauty stretching back thousands of years is timeless.
