A magnificent Japanese ivory tusk composition carved lengthways in high relief with three lacquer decorated Koi.
Signed by the artist carver: Koshu

To clarify what is involved when carving in high relief.
The Koi in high relief in this particular instance are approximately 3 mm high.
This meant the artist had to remove 3 mm from the rest of the tusk, to ensure the Koi fish stand out in high relief.

A superb piece, excellent patina.
