Indonesian Macassar Ebony Bust of the Buddha

Superbly carved, finely detailed, in Macassar Ebony:
A magnificent portrayal of the Buddha in transcendental meditation.

Macassar Ebony has been Red Listed for “ Vulnerability for Extinction since 1998 “ due to having been heavily exploited for its fine streaked ebony timber.
The number of mature trees has declined and large parts of the habitat have been converted to crops.
Due to conservation actions and efforts, felling of the species is now only allowed by quota, unfortunately illegal logging continues.

High Quality Macassar Ebony carvings are becoming scarce.
This was carved in the early 1980's.
